The Cancer Champion program was created for…

Questions & Concerns

I am just too tired to exercise. When your oncologist says you need to exercise, is your first thought, “I am just too tired”? It may require considerable effort to get up and move around, but increasing your physical activity may actually reduce fatigue. Studies show that cancer patients who exercise are less tired and depressed and sleep better than patients who don’t exercise.
Nutrition is so confusing, what is safe and beneficial? With so much confusing information out there, Cancer Champion will provide the critical basics of nutrition while fighting or recovering from cancer. You will receive a 30 day meal plan that includes cancer fighting ingredients and healing foods. If you do not want to follow the custom plan, there are a variety of individual recipes, hand picked by our nutritionist, available in the members area. Additionally, you will also have the opportunity to join a live weekly call with Jen and our nutrition consultant, Damian. The calls are intended to bring the members of the Cancer Champion community together. They are a great way to stay up to date on the most current nutritional and lifestyle literature, receive tips on how to implement a whole foods diet into your busy schedule, and connect with other members of our community.
Quality of life. Physical activity may have beneficial effects on overall health-related quality of life and on specific quality-of-life issues, including body image/self-esteem, emotional well-being, sexuality, sleep disturbance, social functioning, anxiety, fatigue, and pain. In a 2012 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examining physical activity in cancer survivors, physical activity was found to reduce fatigue and depression and to improve physical functioning, social functioning, and mental health.
Gyms are intimidating. If the idea of walking into a gym is overwhelming you are not alone. Cancer Champion Fitness provides a safe, at-home workout that you can do any time of the day.
I am afraid of getting injured. This is a common and understandable fear for most people. Jen is a certified Medical Exercise Specialist, with a specialty in cancer. The Cancer Champion Fitness  program is designed to meet you where you are in your cancer journey. With weekly live video check-in calls and the option of a one-on-one live call with Jen will address any concerns.

Members, who are in various stages of recovery or who are focused on remaining healthy, are invited to weekly group chats led by Jennifer and Damien where information is shared, questions answered, and support offered.  The carefully leveled exercises give each participant options to regain and keep strength by gently pushing through the exhaustion of recovery. Extensive meal plans, recipes, and ingredient descriptions are a large focus of this program with a whole food approach.  Jennifer and Damian are experts who are enthusiastic and dedicated to building a close community for people who are looking for a proactive way to take on the challenge of cancer.

My yoga practice began in 2000, as I searched for movement modalities that emphasized an awareness of the inner self versus the visual aesthetics of the outer form. Although my personal practice continues to be influenced by dance and Pilates, my approach has evolved to allow for more self-compassion and mindfulness. I completed my 200-RYT training in 2013, and I have continued to learn more about the science of our body-brain connection in healing and recovery from adverse life experiences. In 2018, I completed the 300-hr Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga facilitator (TCTSY-F) training through the The Center for Trauma and Embodiment at Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, MA, where I continue to work closely with my mentors, David Emerson and Jenn Turner, in this methodology. With a keen awareness of power dynamics and an emphasis on inclusivity and anti-oppression, I feel deeply grateful to share this evidence-based healing practice with individuals in private session and in small group classes. I have enjoyed working with students and staff at UC Davis, clinicians in private practice, and medical care providers, as well as offering trauma informed trainings and experiential workshops for instructors of other yoga traditions and movement-based methods.

Since 1994, I have lived in Davis, CA with my husband, our three children (now adults) and beloved rescue dogs.

I have been involved in nutrition for over 20 years and in the last 6 years I have been lucky enough to work professionally in this field as a nutrition consultant and coach. I have worked with many different people suffering from a variety of conditions. This includes those currently in treatment for cancer and those looking to avoid a re-occurrence. It is hard to imagine that there is anyone still left that has not in some way been impacted by this disease and it is becoming harder and harder to ignore the importance of nutrition for cancer care.

As Cancer Champions came to fruition, I was thrilled when asked to be a part of it.  Having the opportunity to be a positive part of ones cancer journey is a true honor.

Kristina Sampson is a Certified Oncology Nutrition Consultant, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, founder of www.thevaildiet.com and Functional Cancer Nutrition (website coming soon), and author of Leave Cancer in the Dust: 50 Tips to Prevent Breast Cancer and Supercharge Your Health.

Since 2007, Kris has been challenged several times with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer, and has used a combination of conventional and alternative treatments and modalities to help her heal.

Her first diagnosis in 2007 taught Kristina that life is too short to postpone following her passion. She began her formal nutrition education shortly after ending treatment and shared her knowledge through her website and health coaching practice. Since then she has begun focusing on helping those dealing with cancer or who are trying to prevent the disease. With her clients, she promotes eating a low-glycemic diet that includes real, nutrient-dense, and high-quality food; reducing exposure to toxins in both diet and environment; being physically active; and incorporating one’s own unique approach to spirituality into his/her life.

Kristina received her health-coaching certificate from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in 2014 and her Oncology Nutrition Consultant certification from the Oncology Nutrition Institute in July 2019. She is also currently pursuing a Masters degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine at the University of Western States in Portland, OR and expects to finish in summer 2020.
